Apple: Hardware vs. Software

Very solid point of view from James Higgs regarding the conflicting message sent but the two divisions of Apple: Hardware vs. Software

They do in fact paint a very different interaction (target audience) focus. I have had a very negative reaction to the Apple software design as of late. They keep turning up the dial on these designs. I love the functionality of the application, just not the interface I have to clod through to use it.

Perhaps Apple sees this skeuomorphism as a way to bring the market share they need into the fold. I as a early adopter however, have started to feel less and less at home using their "Life" product line software. Still, I am in love their hardware design. Hopefully they will find a comfortable middle ground or drop the unneeded frill.

Sewing Machine Orchestra

A fun teaser video for the Sewing Machine Orchestra. I love the depth of sound he is able to get out. I really wasn't expecting the percussive bass that he gets.

Internet privacy: where are our priorities?

Something that came to mind while reading The Wall Street Journal's article regarding a silent probe on Jacob Appelbaum (volunteer for Wikileaks):

Why is it when Facebook "screws up" their privacy settings or Google opts you into a service you don't want by default, we scream "Off with their heads!"? Meanwhile, the governement can make silent probe after silent probe on unsuspecting people, despite no criminal charges being filed, and we sit silent?

Are we actually concerned with our privacy on the internet or just looking for someone to bash on with no real consequences? Why is it we feel entitled to privacy on services we sign up for but not in the country we are citizens of and pay taxes in?

No change has been made to a law that has been in existence since before the internet was created. The main reason for this? Because it would slow down investigations. Let me re-translate that for you. If we do it the right way it will take longer. We should continue to encroach on peoples privacy for the sake of those that have the burden of proof. Why should they have to prove they need access to IP and email addresses for a justifiable purpose just like phone and mail? That would slow down the investigation!!
